Important

Remember to read the Best Practices chapter common for all of our hypervisor plugins.

This document aims to provide the reader with information about the Bacula Enterprise Libvirt Plugin. The document briefly describes the target technology of the plugin, defines the scope of its operations, and presents its main features.

The main goal of this plugin is to perform backups of virtual machines hosted on hypervisors compatible with Libvirt, as well as their disks in QCOW2 format.

Libvirt is an open-source toolkit designed to provide a unified interface for managing virtualization technologies. It offers a comprehensive API, a set of command-line tools, and libraries that enable the creation, monitoring, and management of virtual machines (referred to as Domains in Libvirt) and related resources across a wide range of hypervisors, including KVM, QEMU, Xen, and VMware ESXi.

By abstracting the underlying differences between these virtualization platforms, Libvirt simplifies the administration of heterogeneous virtualized environments. Its features include virtual machine lifecycle management, resource allocation, network and storage configuration, security controls, and support for remote management.

Libvirt is widely adopted in both enterprise and open-source virtualization solutions, serving as a foundational component for cloud platforms, data centers, and development environments.
