The overall backup operation involves the following steps:
Resolve the instance list: use
instanceif provided, otherwise query all local instances.Build the database selection (
database/database_exclude/ regex). Read-only databases are automatically excluded.If
external=no(default), run the IRIS online backup command for the Bacula level:Full -> IRIS Full
Differential -> IRIS Cumulative
Incremental -> IRIS Incremental

Backup Methods
The IRIS Plugin supports multiple backup methods. Choose the method based on your recovery objectives and storage capabilities.
Online Backup (default)
When external=no (default), the plugin runs IRIS native online backups using BACKUP^DBACK at the Bacula job level:
Full -> IRIS Full
Differential -> IRIS Cumulative
Incremental -> IRIS Incremental
This method is recommended for most environments because it provides application-aware backups without requiring storage snapshots.
Advantages:
Minimal or no interruption to production workloads.
Works without snapshot-capable storage.
Disadvantages:
Backup and restore can be slower for very large datasets.
Restoring a single database still requires processing the full backup file.
Concurrent External Backup
When external=yes, the plugin runs the external/concurrent workflow:

This method is useful when you need to align backups with storage snapshots or external copies. Restore operations require both the external copy and the incremental backup files.
Advantages:
Minimal interruption while still enabling snapshot-aligned workflows.
Useful when a pure online backup is not feasible.
Disadvantages:
More complex restore workflow (external copy plus incremental backup).
Requires a running IRIS instance during restore.
External Backup with Snapshot Orchestration
For environments that rely on storage snapshots (NAS or array-based), Bacula can orchestrate the sequence around the IRIS Plugin:
Freeze IRIS writes if required by the snapshot method (use
.querywithfreeze).Trigger the snapshot using your storage tooling or Bacula snapshot plugin.
Thaw IRIS writes (use
.querywiththaw).Copy or mount the snapshot for backup ingestion.
Finalize any external backup bookkeeping in IRIS if your workflow requires it.
The IRIS Plugin does not perform snapshot orchestration by itself. Use Bacula job orchestration (for example, RunScript directives
and storage plugins) to enforce the correct order and handle error recovery.
Advantages:
Leverages fast storage snapshots for very large datasets.
Reduces backup window when storage snapshots are available.
Disadvantages:
Requires reliable orchestration across storage and database systems.
Error handling and rollback must be designed at the workflow level.
Backup File Structure
A single IRIS backup produces entries similar to the following:

The catalog entries include the IRIS instance name as a prefix and the generated backup artifacts. Journal files are stored using the original journal path under the instance prefix.
Consistency and Delta Handling
For incremental and differential backups, the plugin compares the previous backup time recorded in the IRIS volume with the local delta catalog. If they do not match, the backup is automatically upgraded to a Full to keep a consistent chain.
