Restore Procedure

The Bacula Enterprise IRIS Plugin restores backups by first restoring the backup artifacts to the local filesystem and then invoking IRIS restore commands. The following workflows are supported:

  1. Full restore of all databases from the backup dump(s).

  2. Selective restore using a directory list file.

  3. Restore with different journal replay modes (just restored, all journals, selected, or none).

  4. Restore using local dump files (input_dump) instead of restored files.

Depending on the desired result, the restore operation should be parameterized differently.

Restore Parameters

When restoring, the plugin writes dump and journal files to disk and then executes IRIS restore routines. Use Where=/ to preserve original paths, and control destination directories using the parameters below.

The following parameters are available to control the restore behavior within the Plugin Options menu during a Bconsole restore session:

Restore Use Cases

The following restore scenarios are supported and described below:

  1. Full restore using dumps and journals from the backup:

    1. Run a restore session selecting the IRIS backup job.

    2. Select all backup contents.

    3. Use Where=/.

  2. Restore using local dump files (no files restored from Bacula):

    • Use input_dump=/path/file1.cbk,/path/file2.cbk and set instance to the target instance(s)

    • The plugin will invoke IRIS restore commands using the specified files

  3. Selective restore (subset of directories):

    • Provide directories_path pointing to a file that lists directories to restore (one per line)

    • The plugin switches to EXTSELCT^DBREST

  4. Journal replay control:

    • Set journal_option: - 1 = replay journals just restored - 2 = replay all journals in journal directory (default) - 3 = replay selected globals/directories (requires journal_globals_path) - 4 = do not replay journals

  5. Use alternate destinations for restored files:

    • Set destination_path_dump and/or destination_path_journals to control where files are restored before IRIS restore

  6. Clean up restore artifacts:

    • Set restore_cleanup=yes to delete restored dump and journal files after completion

Restore Methods and Guidance

Full System Restore (Cold Backup)

This workflow applies to cold backups (file-level or hypervisor-level backups). It is outside the IRIS Plugin scope but is included here for completeness:

  1. Restore the operating system files and all IRIS database files from backup so the host matches the original state.

  2. Start InterSystems IRIS in maintenance or emergency mode.

  3. Apply journal recovery as required by your IRIS configuration.

Advantages:

  • Restores the system to a known full state with all files aligned.

  • Useful when the entire host must be recovered.

Disadvantages:

  • Requires full host restoration and downtime.

  • Recovery time is longer and involves OS-level steps.

Online Backup Restore (Incremental/Cumulative)

This workflow applies to backups created by the IRIS Plugin (.cbk plus journals). It uses IRIS restore routines such as EXTALL^DBREST for full restore and EXTSELCT^DBREST for selective restore.

Procedure (Plugin-Based Restore)

  1. Start a Bacula restore session and select the IRIS backup JobId(s).

  2. Select the IRIS artifacts to restore (typically the .cbk file and journal files).

  3. Use Where=/ so the plugin can place artifacts in their expected paths.

  4. Set plugin restore options in Plugin Options based on the restore scenario: - Full restore: keep directories_path empty to use EXTALL^DBREST. - Selective restore: provide directories_path with one directory per line to use EXTSELCT^DBREST. - Journal replay: set journal_option (1=just restored, 2=all in journal, 3=selected, 4=none). - If journal_option=3, also set journal_globals_path for directory/global selection. - If restoring to alternate locations, set destination_path_dump and/or destination_path_journals. - If using local dump files instead of Bacula-restored files, set input_dump.

  5. Run the restore job. The plugin restores artifacts to disk and invokes the IRIS restore routines.

  6. Optional: set restore_cleanup=yes to remove restored dump and journal files after IRIS completes the restore.

Notes:

  • A running IRIS instance is required for online restore workflows.

  • allow_updates controls IRIS update behavior during restore (allowupd).

  • Ensure the File Daemon user can write to the configured destination paths.

Advantages:

  • Supports full or selective restore without rebuilding the entire host.

  • Journal replay options allow different recovery points within the available journal set.

Disadvantages:

  • Requires a running IRIS instance for restore operations.

  • Selective restore depends on a correct directories_path list and journal options.

Directory List File Example

The directories_path file contains one directory name per line. IRIS deletes this file after a successful restore.

Backup Artifacts Map

The IRIS Plugin restores from a small set of artifacts that are captured during backup:

  • .cbk: IRIS online backup dump file used by EXTALL^DBREST or EXTSELCT^DBREST

  • Switched journal file (.log or .logz): required to replay journal changes after restoring the dump

  • journal.log: general journal metadata file

  • IRIS.DAT files: included in external/concurrent workflows for database directory consistency

  • <jobname>.deltaLink: Bacula catalog helper for backup chain consistency (not used directly by restore)
